LEISURE WORLD OF MARYLAND OUTFITS 50 KITCHENS “FORWARD @50”!
As Leisure World of Maryland in Montgomery County, Md. prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, residents have decided to take on a project designed to improve lives within the broader community. Residents are donating supplies designed to outfit 50 kitchens with small appliances, cookware, glassware, flatware, cleaning supplies and just about anything else a residential kitchen might need. Leisure World’s “Forward@50!” committee is planning a week long anniversary celebration this September, for Community Day the group is stocking Montgomery County kitchens in partnership with a local nonprofit, A Wider Circle, through its “Neighbor to Neighbor” program.
Two members of the “Forward@50!” Committee, Ruth Friedman and Marti Jacobs, chose to manage this project, which will culminate in a presentation of all collected products on Tuesday, September 13. The community has more than 8000 residents in 29 separate neighborhoods, so the pair has given each neighborhood a specific date to drop off their donations to avoid long lines.
They were not expecting the overwhelming support the effort has received thus far in terms of both donations and volunteers. The pair has already sent off two truckloads of donated items to be distributed as they are quickly running out of space to store everything. “We’re thrilled that we’ll clearly exceed our goal and really be able to make an impact,” observed Friedman. “The response has been so gratifying and we’re so proud of our community’s generosity, ” she added.
