USE TUMERIC AS AN ANTI- INFLAMMATORY!

Instead of glucosamine, NSAIDs, narcotics or steroids for inflammation use turmeric. As we age our bodies begin to feel and react very differently to that which may have been able to do on a daily basis without pain. One problem which leads to pain and many problems is inflammation. Our first thought and plan of action is to visit the Dr., which is the right course, but often it will be recommended to take NSAIDS, narcotics or steroids when there are other, and possibly more potent and less addictive remedies.

Inflammation is not to be taken lightly.  At first an aspirin or Tylenol will suffice, but the truth is, they are both for pain. Inflammation in the over-the-counter world is affected by ibuprofen / NSAID.  The NSAID category is not recommended for patients with kidney issues, liver issues, etc.  So, where do you turn when you know you must take of the pain and inflammation, but cannot and do want to further injur your organs. Tumeric.  As easy as that sounds, it is truly viable.

Factually, turmeric is such a potent herb that you must proceed with caution if you are on blood lowering medications.

Tumeric is an ancient rhizome, as is ginger, both of which are used as herbs and teas and tinctures and cooking spices.  Tumeric is the highest ingredient in curry.

When cooking with ground turmeric powder, the University of Maryland recommends “…1 to 3 grams per day. One gram of ground turmeric powder is about ½ teaspoon. Three grams is about 1½ teaspoons of ground turmeric powder.

The general recommended dose is 400-600mg of standardized curcumin powder 1-3 times per day. The NIH suggests you can take up to 500mg up to 4 times per day…”

Tumeric is also sold as a supplement.  The main anti-inflammatory ingredient in turmeric is curcumin.

Tumeric has many other health benefits besides inflammation for pain of joints of osteo and arthritis patients.  It is also improves brain health, lowers the risk of heart disease, can treat depression, aides as a liver detox, improves blood circulation and is an aide to digestion like ginger.

This ancient rhizome has its health benefits steeped in ancient medicine; historically proven over the centuries, long before big-pharma took over.

The NIH found preliminary studies found that curcuminoids may

  • Reduce the number of heart attacks bypass patients had after surgery
  • Control knee pain from osteoarthritis as well as ibuprofen did
  • Reduce the skin irritation that often occurs after radiation treatments for breast cancer.

The properties of turmeric aide in Alzheimer’s, heart disease, brain disease, age related illness and pain and aide as a cold remedy as it builds immunity, and in lower doses aides with digestion and ibs symptoms.

Again, be cautious when taking blood thinners, or have a problem with gallstones or are on other chemical medicines.  Always let your Dr. and herbalist know what you are taking.

If you are already on a blood thinner medication, be aware not to let your blood pressure drop; it has been noted that turmeric is blood pressure reducer.

Good eating, good tea, good health, the ancient and natural way!
