GAS, GRASS OR ASS… HOW DO WE GET A RIDE AS WE AGE
“Giving up the keys” doesn’t have to mean giving up.
There are many reasons we don’t want to drive, especially as we age. We don’t all like driving at night, or in the snow or in the rain or just to go to the store or Doctor’s office. It doesn’t matter why we don’t want to drive or as we become elders that we are no longer able to drive; what matters is that we have options. We don’t have to rely on our children, or house-help or that kind neighbor who always keeps an eye on us. We have independence and our minds still work, but we still require the need to do errands, so how do we get a ride as we age.
So, how do we get around? How do we get a ride as we age and no longer have that yearning to get behind the wheel or someone to ask?
Yes, we have apps for Uber, local taxi, Lyft, Enterprise rent-a-car, etc., but not all of us are comfortable using the apps.
EZ Ride in New Jersey has it right! They have had a solution to getting a ride since last century. They offer on demand transportation for adults 18 years or older in partnership with transportation network companies (TNCs) like Lyft and Uber throughout New Jersey.
Ryde4Life is the program in New Jersey that is a membership-based program. Riders fill up a registration form and establish a transportation account using a credit or debit card. Once that’s setup, rides can be scheduled in real time. It’s as easy to register, reserve, and ride.
All fees and charges are collected in advance from your credit/debit card by charging $50 to fund your account; fees will be deducted from the available balance, and additional money will be debited from your card when the account balance drops to $25. You will receive a monthly statement of all rides and their cost.
Many towns and cities have programs for Doctor visits and groceries, such as dial-a-ride, where you must be over 60, but what about just going to the theater or a meeting, or visiting with a friend at a restaurant? Well, in New Jersey, they have made it easy and safe to get a ride.
Remember you always have a choice how to get about town, some areas have a slimmer budget, whilst others have may not have a lot of access, but when you need or want a ride, visit your town or city’s website to see what they offer and if it fits your needs. Also, you have the ability to contact Uber or Lyft either for yourself or to arrange a ride for your elderly parent or relative.
Rides are available. Take advantage of today’s senior programs, apps and independent driving companies! Live and go anywhere and everywhere! And THAT’S how we get a ride as we age!
